<h1 style="text-align: left;">&#8220;SANDAL EPIPHANY&#8221;</h1>
<h4 style="text-align: left;">A Short Comedic Sketch by Pantelis Melissinos &#8211; Poet Sandal Maker to The Stars</h4>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<p data-start="364" data-end="391"><strong data-start="364" data-end="391">December. Late evening.</strong></p>
<p data-start="393" data-end="643">Pantelis Melissinos—fresh from giving his staff a month off—is in lockdown mode inside his art and sandal atelier, where sandals and colorful artworks—featuring uncensored Greek mythological nude scenes not meant for prudes—pile up in glorious chaos.</p>
<p data-start="645" data-end="759">Just as peace seems possible, a fiftyish, overproduced, glam platinum-blonde lady knocks on the shop’s glass door.</p>
<p data-start="761" data-end="795">It’s Jane—a Park Avenue socialite.</p>
<p data-start="802" data-end="953"><strong data-start="802" data-end="840">JANE <em>(from behind the glass door):</em></strong><br data-start="840" data-end="843" />Pantelis, Pantelis, darling!<br data-start="871" data-end="874" />Open the door—quickly, before my mind resets to airplane mode!<br data-start="936" data-end="939" />I just landed!</p>
<p data-start="960" data-end="1174"><strong data-start="960" data-end="995">PANTELIS <em>(thinking to himself):</em></strong><br data-start="995" data-end="998" />Ah. Jane. My recurring Upper East Side muse— a blast.<br data-start="1051" data-end="1054" />She doesn’t just visit—she takes you hostage.<br data-start="1099" data-end="1102" />I should’ve gone invisible—joined the installation and stopped blinking.</p>
<p data-start="1176" data-end="1184"><em><strong>(to her)</strong></em></p>
<p data-start="1186" data-end="1360">I am three minutes into a four-week period of rest, repair, and denial.<br data-start="1257" data-end="1260" />The spirits have been dismissed.<br data-start="1292" data-end="1295" />The lights are asleep.<br data-start="1317" data-end="1320" />And I have emotionally left the country.</p>
<p data-start="1367" data-end="1524"><strong data-start="1367" data-end="1376">JANE:</strong><br data-start="1376" data-end="1379" />Open the door. Don’t do this to me.<br data-start="1414" data-end="1417" />I survived a long bumpy plane ride to see you—<br data-start="1463" data-end="1466" />turbulence so bad my butt lift is no longer symmetrical.</p>
<p data-start="1526" data-end="1562">My surgeon would call it modern art.</p>
<p data-start="1564" data-end="1659">Every minute you stall—<br data-start="1587" data-end="1590" />my boobs droop…<br data-start="1605" data-end="1608" />and nothing this expensive belongs in the basement.</p>
<p data-start="1666" data-end="1779"><strong data-start="1666" data-end="1690">PANTELIS <em>(thinking):</em></strong><br data-start="1690" data-end="1693" />I open the door.<br data-start="1709" data-end="1712" />Have a show—with snacks<br data-start="1735" data-end="1738" />and an aftertaste of a nervous breakdown.</p>
<p data-start="1781" data-end="1852">Man, she’s wacko.<br data-start="1798" data-end="1801" />But—<br data-start="1805" data-end="1808" />Theatrically, invaluable.<br data-start="1833" data-end="1836" />Box-office gold.</p>
<p data-start="1859" data-end="1956"><strong data-start="1859" data-end="1906">JANE <em>(face pressed against the glass door):</em></strong><br data-start="1906" data-end="1909" />I’m jet-lagged, bloated, and emotionally bleah!</p>
<p data-start="1963" data-end="2129"><strong data-start="1963" data-end="2009">PANTELIS <em>(unlocking the door reluctantly):</em></strong><br data-start="2009" data-end="2012" />Hey Jane.<br data-start="2021" data-end="2024" />Ahead of your visits, I’m done being a playwright.<br data-start="2074" data-end="2077" />After, I’m alone writing a sketch—<br data-start="2111" data-end="2114" />with you in it.</p>
<p data-start="2136" data-end="2220"><strong data-start="2136" data-end="2145">JANE:</strong><br data-start="2145" data-end="2148" />Hi, honey. Thanks for opening.<br data-start="2178" data-end="2181" />Did I tell you I’m apparently single?</p>
<p data-start="2222" data-end="2247">My husband disappeared—</p>
<p data-start="2249" data-end="2359">—along with my Louis Vuitton, which honestly hurts more,<br data-start="2305" data-end="2308" />because at least the bag held me when I was crying.</p>
<p data-start="2361" data-end="2514">I mean, really—first the husband disappears, then the handbag?<br data-start="2423" data-end="2426" />What is this, a pattern,<br data-start="2450" data-end="2453" />or is my subconscious calling an Uber to flee past decisions?</p>
<p data-start="2521" data-end="2584"><strong data-start="2521" data-end="2534">PANTELIS:</strong><br data-start="2534" data-end="2537" />Interesting… did you marry the man, or the bag?</p>
<p data-start="2591" data-end="2720"><strong data-start="2591" data-end="2600">JANE:</strong><br data-start="2600" data-end="2603" />The husband.<br data-start="2615" data-end="2618" />I wear him to events—<br data-start="2639" data-end="2642" />neutral tone, goes with everything.<br data-start="2677" data-end="2680" />Coordinates with my bags.<br data-start="2705" data-end="2708" />And he pays.</p>
<p data-start="2727" data-end="2786"><strong data-start="2727" data-end="2740">PANTELIS:</strong><br data-start="2740" data-end="2743" />So… he’s functional.<br data-start="2763" data-end="2766" />Not only decorative.</p>
<p data-start="2793" data-end="2853"><strong data-start="2793" data-end="2802">JANE:</strong><br data-start="2802" data-end="2805" />Please!<br data-start="2812" data-end="2815" />I’m the ornament.<br data-start="2832" data-end="2835" />He’s the warranty.</p>
<p data-start="2855" data-end="3036">Let’s skip the foreplay, Pantelis.<br data-start="2889" data-end="2892" />I’m so jet-lagged I must buy something expensive—<br data-start="2941" data-end="2944" />I mean, meaningful—<br data-start="2963" data-end="2966" />before I vomit, scream,<br data-start="2989" data-end="2992" />or sleep with a Greek man who needs therapy.</p>
<p data-start="3038" data-end="3221">I’m at a turning point in my life<br data-start="3071" data-end="3074" />and I need to make a purchase with soul—<br data-start="3114" data-end="3117" />something handmade that says,<br data-start="3146" data-end="3149" />“Look at me. My credit might be flawless,<br data-start="3190" data-end="3193" />but I’m not high-end trash.”</p>
<p data-start="3223" data-end="3269">I need your art sandals.<br data-start="3247" data-end="3250" />And a new identity.</p>
<p data-start="3271" data-end="3374">Last time I came, I got my usual T-strap.<br data-start="3312" data-end="3315" />But now—<br data-start="3323" data-end="3326" />I need something creative.<br data-start="3352" data-end="3355" />Curative.<br data-start="3364" data-end="3367" />Mental.</p>
<p data-start="3376" data-end="3387">—Obviously.</p>
<p data-start="3389" data-end="3450">I want sandals that act like a therapist—<br data-start="3430" data-end="3433" />without judgment.</p>
<p data-start="3452" data-end="3526">Make me a pair of your masterful art sandals<br data-start="3496" data-end="3499" />my friends will rave about.</p>
<p data-start="3528" data-end="3563"><em><strong>(Her eyes catch his new paintings.)</strong></em></p>
<p data-start="3565" data-end="3740">And your new paintings—oh my God all this nudity—they’re filthy. I love them!<br data-start="3642" data-end="3645" />If I stare any longer, I’m ordering a martini,<br data-start="3691" data-end="3694" />making bad decisions,<br data-start="3715" data-end="3718" />and blaming my mother.</p>
<p data-start="3747" data-end="3964"><strong data-start="3747" data-end="3760">PANTELIS:</strong><br data-start="3760" data-end="3763" />I was about to close shop and run—<br data-start="3797" data-end="3800" />escape a summer session joyfully strangled<br data-start="3842" data-end="3845" />by a tax-thirsty Eurocracy<br data-start="3871" data-end="3874" />that gets aroused by paperwork<br data-start="3904" data-end="3907" />and climaxes every time it mass-murders small businesses—</p>
<p data-start="3966" data-end="3980"><em><strong>(looks at her)</strong></em></p>
<p data-start="3982" data-end="4015">—and you need art sandals.<br data-start="4008" data-end="4011" />Now.</p>
<p data-start="4017" data-end="4084">I’m burned out.<br data-start="4032" data-end="4035" />In writer’s blackout.<br data-start="4056" data-end="4059" />And financially violated.</p>
<p data-start="4091" data-end="4171"><strong data-start="4091" data-end="4100">JANE:</strong><br data-start="4100" data-end="4103" />You call this violated?<br data-start="4126" data-end="4129" />Sweetheart, I’ve been married three times.</p>
<p data-start="4178" data-end="4232"><strong data-start="4178" data-end="4191">PANTELIS:</strong><br data-start="4191" data-end="4194" />…You need art sandals on short notice!</p>
<p data-start="4239" data-end="4393"><strong data-start="4239" data-end="4248">JANE:</strong><br data-start="4248" data-end="4251" />Short notice?<br data-start="4264" data-end="4267" />My current marriage was short notice.<br data-start="4304" data-end="4307" />I didn’t know him—<br data-start="4325" data-end="4328" />I knew his net worth.<br data-start="4349" data-end="4352" />I assumed the rest would sort itself out.</p>
<p data-start="4400" data-end="4496"><strong data-start="4400" data-end="4413">PANTELIS:</strong><br data-start="4413" data-end="4416" />I was trying to close shop and rest.<br data-start="4452" data-end="4455" />Instead, I found playwright’s material.</p>
<p data-start="4498" data-end="4524">—Still.<br data-start="4505" data-end="4508" />I need to relax.</p>
<p data-start="4531" data-end="4616"><strong data-start="4531" data-end="4540">JANE:</strong><br data-start="4540" data-end="4543" />Relax? I haven’t relaxed since the ’90s—<br data-start="4583" data-end="4586" />and that was a clerical error.</p>
<p data-start="4618" data-end="4718">Don’t do this to me, Pantelis.<br data-start="4648" data-end="4651" />I could melt right here.<br data-start="4675" data-end="4678" />Your antique rags can’t handle moisture.</p>
<p data-start="4725" data-end="4779"><strong data-start="4725" data-end="4738">PANTELIS:</strong><br data-start="4738" data-end="4741" />All right. Sit.<br data-start="4756" data-end="4759" />Take your shoes off.</p>
<p data-start="4786" data-end="4861"><strong data-start="4786" data-end="4795">JANE:</strong><br data-start="4795" data-end="4798" />Shoes?</p>
<p data-start="4786" data-end="4861"><em><strong>(looks at him)</strong></em></p>
<p data-start="4786" data-end="4861">With that tone,<br data-start="4839" data-end="4842" />I assumed foreplay.</p>
<p data-start="4868" data-end="4923"><strong data-start="4868" data-end="4881">PANTELIS:</strong><br data-start="4881" data-end="4884" />Shoes only.<br data-start="4895" data-end="4898" />foreplay is not in stock.</p>
<p data-start="4930" data-end="4992"><strong data-start="4930" data-end="4939">JANE:</strong><br data-start="4939" data-end="4942" />Hunger dreams of banquets.<br data-start="4968" data-end="4971" />Reality rarely cares.</p>
<p data-start="4999" data-end="5170"><strong data-start="4999" data-end="5056">PANTELIS <em>(with the back of his palm to his forehead):</em></strong><br data-start="5056" data-end="5059" />Fatigued I stand,<br data-start="5076" data-end="5079" />In writer’s blackout ’m truly bound.<br data-start="5115" data-end="5118" />And inspiration—gone to ground—<br data-start="5149" data-end="5152" />Has fled the land.</p>
<p data-start="5177" data-end="5215"><strong data-start="5177" data-end="5186">JANE:</strong><br data-start="5186" data-end="5189" />Uninspired!?<br data-start="5201" data-end="5204" />Look at me.</p>
<p data-start="5217" data-end="5261"><em><strong>(looks at herself in one of his art mirrors)</strong></em></p>
<p data-start="5263" data-end="5321">I’ve inspired surgeons, photographers, and three husbands.</p>

<p data-start="5557" data-end="5738"><strong data-start="5557" data-end="5569">PANTELIS </strong><em><strong>(raising his arms; lights flicker, wind howls. </strong><strong>A cyclone of leather scraps, glitz, glam, and unresolved childhood issues fills the room—hair blown, sandals flying.):</strong></em></p>
<p data-start="5740" data-end="5807">It’s coming—<br data-start="5752" data-end="5755" />it’s coming—<br data-start="5767" data-end="5770" />I’m right on the edge of an epiphany!</p>
<p data-start="5809" data-end="5860"><em><strong>(From the leather-scrap tornado emerges an entity.)</strong></em></p>

<p data-start="6130" data-end="6194">Of course he’s sexy.<br data-start="6150" data-end="6153" />Short toga. Strong calf. Zero commitment.</p>
<p data-start="6196" data-end="6211">Zeus on Grindr.</p>
<p data-start="6213" data-end="6375">My therapist warned me about Greece.<br data-start="6249" data-end="6252" />Too much history.<br data-start="6269" data-end="6272" />Too many mothers-in-law.<br data-start="6296" data-end="6299" />Ouzo, moussaka,<br data-start="6314" data-end="6317" />and men who look divine<br data-start="6340" data-end="6343" />but are emotionally unavailable.</p>
<p data-start="6377" data-end="6408"><em><strong>(The Greek god poses, flexing.)</strong></em></p>
<p data-start="6410" data-end="6510">Honestly—<br data-start="6419" data-end="6422" />NO boundaries.<br data-start="6436" data-end="6439" />Just uncensored mythology, incest,<br data-start="6473" data-end="6476" />and erectile symbolism everywhere.</p>
<p data-start="6512" data-end="6586">If this is a god,<br data-start="6529" data-end="6532" />I need a martini,<br data-start="6549" data-end="6552" />a waiver,<br data-start="6561" data-end="6564" />and a very good alibi.</p>

<p data-start="357" data-end="428">She breezed in—<strong data-start="372" data-end="425">elegant, poised, carrying an air of quiet mystery</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="430" data-end="489">“Good afternoon,” she said, her voice <strong data-start="468" data-end="486">smooth as silk</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="491" data-end="590">“Hello! What can I do for you?” Pantelis Melissinos asked, eager to assist such a polite visitor.</p>
<p data-start="592" data-end="651"><strong data-start="592" data-end="636">“I’m interested in the &#8216;Galliko&#8217; model,”</strong> she replied.</p>
<p data-start="653" data-end="819">As always, Pantelis’ assistant handed him a <strong data-start="697" data-end="727">half-made pair in her size</strong>. While Pantelis adjusted the straps to her feet, she watched—<strong data-start="789" data-end="816">silent, focused, amused</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="821" data-end="865">When he finished, she glanced at the door.</p>
<p data-start="867" data-end="927"><strong data-start="867" data-end="925">“I should go—my husband and kids are waiting outside.”</strong></p>
<p data-start="929" data-end="1002">Pantelis slid a pen and paper her way. <strong data-start="968" data-end="1000">“Please, your contact info.”</strong></p>
<p data-start="1004" data-end="1073">She scribbled quickly, flashed a smile. <strong data-start="1044" data-end="1071">“I’ll be back at four.”</strong></p>
<p data-start="1075" data-end="1189">He glanced down. <strong data-start="1092" data-end="1107">Usha Vance.</strong> The name hit him like <strong data-start="1130" data-end="1151">Zeus’ thunderbolt</strong>. His curiosity got the best of him.</p>
<p data-start="1191" data-end="1334"><strong data-start="1191" data-end="1316">“Any relation to Cyrus Vance—the former Secretary of State? He spoke at my Parsons School of Design graduation ages ago,”</strong> Pantelis asked.</p>
<p data-start="1336" data-end="1379">She smiled—polite, but distant. <strong data-start="1368" data-end="1377">“No.”</strong></p>
<p data-start="1381" data-end="1453">She turned to leave, then hesitated. Her eyes flicked around the shop.</p>
<p data-start="1455" data-end="1493"><strong data-start="1455" data-end="1491">“These artworks—are they yours?”</strong></p>
<p data-start="1495" data-end="1584">Pantelis grinned. <strong data-start="1513" data-end="1582">“Yep. Poet, artist, and sandal maker—all in one. What about you?”</strong></p>
<p data-start="1586" data-end="1630">She shrugged. <strong data-start="1600" data-end="1628">“Oh, I’m just a lawyer.”</strong></p>
<p data-start="1632" data-end="1725">Just a lawyer? The words lingered. <strong data-start="1667" data-end="1723">Usha Vance… Usha Vance… Where had he seen that name?</strong></p>
<p data-start="1727" data-end="1860">And then—<strong data-start="1736" data-end="1757">boom. It clicked.</strong> Her husband—a <strong data-start="1772" data-end="1802">vice-presidential nominee!</strong> And here she was, standing in his shop, buying sandals.</p>
<p data-start="1862" data-end="1917">When she left, he turned to his assistants, smirking.</p>
<p data-start="1919" data-end="1993"><strong data-start="1919" data-end="1991">“Well, if she’s wearing my sandals, her husband’s a shoo-in for VP.”</strong></p>
<p data-start="1995" data-end="2010">They laughed.</p>
<p data-start="2012" data-end="2099">At <strong data-start="2015" data-end="2029">four sharp</strong>, she was back. She slipped on the sandals, took a step, and beamed.</p>
<p data-start="2101" data-end="2139"><strong data-start="2101" data-end="2127">“These are wonderful,”</strong> she said.</p>
<p data-start="2141" data-end="2257">Pantelis watched her walk out into the <strong data-start="2180" data-end="2208">golden Athenian sunlight</strong>. A thought hit him, and he turned to his team.</p>
<p data-start="2259" data-end="2342"><strong data-start="2259" data-end="2340">“We just made sandals for the future Second Lady of the United States, guys.”</strong></p>
<p data-start="2344" data-end="2459">He was right. A few months later, there she stood beside <strong data-start="2401" data-end="2415">J.D. Vance</strong> as he was sworn in as <strong data-start="2438" data-end="2456">Vice President</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="2461" data-end="2571"><strong data-start="2461" data-end="2569">Who knows? One day, she might step into an even bigger spotlight—as the First Lady of the United States.</strong></p>

<p data-start="121" data-end="338">One sunny day during the <strong data-start="146" data-end="181">Athens Special Olympics in 2011</strong>, Pantelis Melissinos entered his shop at 7 a.m., blissfully unaware that his quiet morning was about to spiral into a <strong data-start="300" data-end="335">“Gladiator Sandal” extravaganza</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="340" data-end="407">As he prepared for the day, the <strong data-start="372" data-end="404">phone rang like a fire alarm</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="409" data-end="477">“Who calls this early?” he muttered, answering the phone, annoyed.</p>
<p data-start="479" data-end="552"><strong data-start="479" data-end="507">“What time do you open?”</strong> a sharp, coarse, no-nonsense voice barked.</p>
<p data-start="554" data-end="618">Pantelis, never one to back down, snapped back: <strong data-start="602" data-end="616">“AT NINE!”</strong></p>
<p data-start="620" data-end="646">Then the line went dead.</p>
<p data-start="648" data-end="984">At exactly <strong data-start="659" data-end="669">9 a.m.</strong>, Pantelis unlocked the door and stepped into a scene straight out of a spy thriller. <strong data-start="755" data-end="776">Men in dark suits</strong> were scattered around the entire block, sweating in the summer heat but somehow managing to look deadly serious. Their <strong data-start="896" data-end="921">reflective sunglasses</strong> brought to mind Hollywood movies about spies and FBI agents.</p>
<p data-start="986" data-end="1129">“Either I’m about to sell sandals to the <strong data-start="1027" data-end="1045">Blues Brothers</strong>, starring John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, or to the <strong data-start="1096" data-end="1112">Men in Black</strong>,” he muttered.</p>
<p data-start="1131" data-end="1301">Before he could investigate further, a <strong data-start="1170" data-end="1203">swarm of young American girls</strong> burst into the shop, chattering and trying on sandals like they were preparing for the catwalk.</p>
<p data-start="1303" data-end="1388">Moments later, a sweet young woman strolled in and asked for <strong data-start="1364" data-end="1385">gladiator sandals</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="1390" data-end="1411">Then it happened!!!</p>
<p data-start="1413" data-end="1510">A <strong data-start="1415" data-end="1435">middle-aged lady</strong> walked through the door, calm and smiling— <strong data-start="1479" data-end="1507">and all hell broke loose</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="1512" data-end="1603">The girls screamed, jumped, and clung to her like she was the <strong data-start="1574" data-end="1600">goddess Athena herself</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="1605" data-end="1691">“Who’s that, do you know her?” Pantelis asked the young woman, adjusting her straps.</p>
<p data-start="1693" data-end="1735">“She’s famous,” the young woman replied.</p>
<p data-start="1737" data-end="1788">“Like Hollywood famous, or what?” Pantelis asked.</p>
<p data-start="1790" data-end="1846">“Famous ‘cause she’s my mom,” she replied with a grin.</p>
<p data-start="1848" data-end="1902">Pantelis rolled his eyes. <strong data-start="1874" data-end="1888">“So what?”</strong> he snapped.</p>
<p data-start="1904" data-end="1987">“Well, she’s <strong data-start="1917" data-end="1931">Jill Biden</strong>. You know, the <strong data-start="1947" data-end="1983">Second Lady of the United States</strong>.”</p>
<p data-start="1989" data-end="2006">Pantelis froze.</p>
<p data-start="2008" data-end="2071"><strong data-start="2008" data-end="2069">“Wait&#8230;the Vice President’s wife is buying my sandals?!”</strong></p>
<p data-start="2073" data-end="2110">The young woman laughed. <strong data-start="2098" data-end="2108">“Yep!”</strong></p>
<p data-start="2112" data-end="2165">Never one to miss an opportunity, Pantelis grinned.</p>
<p data-start="2167" data-end="2224"><strong data-start="2167" data-end="2222">“Let’s take a photo. By the way, what’s your name?”</strong></p>
<p data-start="2226" data-end="2254"><strong data-start="2226" data-end="2239">“Ashley,”</strong> she replied.</p>
<p data-start="2256" data-end="2365">“Nice meeting you, Ashley. After you two buy my sandals, your dad—I promise you—will become <strong data-start="2348" data-end="2362">President!</strong>”</p>
<p data-start="2367" data-end="2476">They all burst into laughter, and Pantelis, escorting Jill and Ashley Biden, stepped outside for the photo.</p>
<p data-start="2478" data-end="2660">That’s when Pantelis, to his astonishment, realized the <strong data-start="2534" data-end="2570">entire block had been sealed off</strong>. <strong data-start="2572" data-end="2619">Greek police and U.S. Secret Service agents</strong> were everywhere, scanning for threats.</p>
<p data-start="2662" data-end="2732"><strong data-start="2662" data-end="2717">“Oh, that’s what the morning phone call was about,”</strong> he realized.</p>
<p data-start="2734" data-end="2911">As the Bidens were leaving, an American woman trying to enter the shop screamed, <strong data-start="2815" data-end="2857">“THE BIDENS!!! THE BIDENS ARE HERE!!!”</strong> like she’d just opened her front door to a unicorn!</p>
<p data-start="2913" data-end="3079">Needless to say, the <strong data-start="2934" data-end="2973">Gladiator sandals sold out that day</strong>—not just to Jill and Ashley but to their entourage and, for all Pantelis knew, half the Secret Service.</p>

His buddies just call him Pantelis.</p>
<p>Forget <strong>Hermes</strong> and his pranks or <strong>Dionysus</strong> and his party antics – <strong>Pantelis is all about fashioning divine kicks for today&#8217;s legends</strong>, earning him the moniker of the &#8220;<strong>Poet Sandal Maker to The Stars&#8221;</strong>. He&#8217;s also an artist and poet? Yeah, he&#8217;s basically the whole creative package.</p>
<p><strong>Pantelis </strong>-in his legendary workshop filled with his artworks- <strong>is whipping up sandal masterpieces, turning the finest calf leathers from Crete into legendary sandals of exceptional designs and top-notch quality</strong>. He’s got a sandal for every foot&#8217;s fantasy. <strong>Sultry <a href="https://melissinos-art.com/product/gladiator-cleopatra/">&#8220;Gladiators&#8221;</a>, elegant <a href="https://melissinos-art.com/product/ionian/">slingbacks</a>, comfy <a href="https://melissinos-art.com/product/prince-felipe-empedocles/">thongs</a>, and oh, those <a href="https://melissinos-art.com/product/spartan-sophia-loren/">leg-wrapping numbers</a> that make you look like a hunting goddess</strong> – Despite some biblical objections regarding his making gods strutting around in sexy models originally meant for <strong>Aphrodite</strong> or <strong>Artemis</strong>, he insists that <strong>his creations are a celebration of self-expression, comfort, style, and divine fluidity</strong>. Let non-Olympians gossip!</p>
<p><strong>In a rare moment between thunderbolts and godly chores, Zeus, the daddy of Greek gods, crowned Pantelis as God of Greek Sandals. And, let me tell you, Pantelis is leaving a legacy in Greek mythology that&#8217;s straight-up genius, cool as heck, and eternally chic.</strong></p>

<p><strong>His grandfather, George Melissinos, was one of the most famous shoemakers in Athens. He even made hiking shoes for members of the royal family</strong>. <strong>His father, Stavros Melissinos, made the</strong> <a class="post-link" href="https://melissinos-art.com/product-category/sandals/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>ancient Greek sandals</strong></a> fashionable, catching the eye of international celebrities, such as the<strong> Beatles and Sophia Loren</strong>. At the same time, he wrote poems and thus he got known as the<strong> “Sandal-Making Poet&#8221;.</strong></p>
<p><strong>&#8220;The business started with my grandfather in 1920</strong>, when he set up shop on Pandrossou Street, in Monastiraki. A man of the world and always well dressed, he knew how to make shoes, but he was more of a businessman&#8221; says Pantelis Melissinos to &#8216;Espresso&#8217; and continues: &#8220;At that time, all health conscious Athenians used to mountain hike and they needed hiking shoes . . . These were the sport shoes of the time. So, my grandfather made them and among his clients were <strong>Queen Fredericka of Greece</strong> and other members of the royal family.</p>
<p><strong>Unfortunately, his grandfather, Georgios Melissinos passed away, from a stroke, just at the age of 55 and his father Stavros had to put aside his film studies and take over the family business.</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;The times were bad for post-war Greece -we are talking about 1955. So,<strong> my father had the brilliant idea to make for daily life the ancient Greek sandals that my grandfather made for the National Theater of Greece</strong>. He was after all an artistic person and a self-published poet &#8211; hence he became known as &#8220;<strong>the sandal-making poet&#8221;.</strong> Of course, he took a risk back then with the sandals, but it worked out well for him. An English choreographer, who saw them in his display window ordered some for her group<strong>. My father took it as a sign from God and put some more sandals in the window and sold them almost immediately to American tourists. In one day, he made as much money as he would make in a month! &#8221; </strong>says <strong>Pantelis Melissinos.</strong></p>
<p><strong>This is how the new golden era for the sandal workshop began.</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;Men and women started buying our sandals -ordinary people and celebrities as well. <strong>Jackie Onassis</strong>,<strong> Sophia Loren </strong>-who was shooting the movie <strong>&#8216;Boy on a Dolphin&#8217;</strong> in our country- <strong>Agatha Christie</strong>,<strong> Gary Cooper</strong>&#8230; countless celebrities have walked through the doors of our workshop… Of course, the <strong>Beatles</strong> were the ones, who made us a household name, in the late 60’s. They were brought to our store by <strong>Alexis Mardas</strong>, also known as <strong>&#8216;Magic Alex&#8217;</strong>, who was their associate and friend. My brother, who was a big Beatles fan, was thrilled to see them enter our store. <strong>John Lennon</strong> came back alone, for more pairs. However, as soon as the news spread that the Beatles visited Melissinos the Poet and sandal maker, people started flocking to our shop… and of course, other businessmen entered the competition with their own sandals&#8221;, he states.</p>

<h2><strong>Famous People<br />
</strong></h2>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Pantelis Melissinos remembers seeing </strong>-when he was a child- <b>famous people visiting his father&#8217;s shop. &#8220;At that time, well-known Greek artists, like</b> <strong>Tsarouchis, Argyrakis, Katsaros</strong>, were our regular visitors.<strong> In my mind, they belonged to mythical worlds. Especially Tsarouchis with his white beard and hair looked like Homer or Plato,&#8221; </strong>he comments.</p>
</div>
<div class="en_post">
<p><strong>Every day, as soon as he finished school, he ran to the sandal workshop to learn the secrets of the trade. </strong></p>
<p><strong>&#8220;I started making sandals, while I was still a child, I really loved it. At the same time, I started to write, to paint, to play the piano and create music. </strong>At first, I wanted to study at the School of Fine Arts, in Athens but eventually I found myself in America. <strong>I studied illustration at the prestigious Parsons School of Designs in New York City, where I also got my Master’s in Painting. </strong>As soon as I graduated, I became<strong> Artistic Director at the Greek Cultural Center of New York City.</strong> &#8220;I lived in Manhattan throughout the 80s,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p><strong>His decision to return to Greece was linked to a robbery against him. He was attacked by four thugs in New York who broke his finger in an attempt to take a ring he was wearing. </strong></p>
<p>&#8220;I left by ship. After that incident I could not even get on a plane I had become claustrophobic. I took a Polish cargo ship back home. It carried mainly goods, but also took a limited number of travelers. After eight days we arrived in France.<strong> I had my artworks with me, but for some reason the customs officers believed that my paintings were not made by a student, but by an important artist!</strong></p>
<p>Luckily, a policewoman, at the customs, recognized his last name -Melissinos- and asked him if the Poet Sandal Maker of Athens was his father,</p>
<p>&#8220;I told her &#8216;Yes&#8217; and showed her a book of my father’s&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>“Every year I go there and buy sandals from his shop” </strong>she replied.</p>
<p><strong>“So, they let me go”</strong>, he notes.</p>
<p><strong>Returning to his homeland, Pantelis Melissinos found Greece flourishing and he started successfully organizing themed parties for Lakis Raptakis’ beach club “Loft”.</strong></p>
<p><strong>&#8220;I took over the sandal business in 2004. Until then, I would help my father but, he would not let me take initiatives, with regard to new designs etc.</strong> In 2004 he was evicted from Pandrossou St., where the store had been for more than 80 years, and was forced to retire. So, I moved the store to the Psirri area, on Agias Theklas Street, where all our old customers started coming&#8221;.</p>
<p><strong>It was the year of the Olympic Games, so it all worked out very well for Pantelis Melissinos.</strong></p>
<p><strong>&#8220;I also started to become internationally known as the &#8216;Poet Sandal Maker to The Stars&#8217; and got involved in the process of experimenting with hand painted sandals and other unique designs. I enjoyed this a lot and of course, I worked very hard, for the name I </strong><strong>started making for myself</strong> &#8221; he points out.</p>
<p><strong>As for his own customer list of celebrities? It is very large and includes kings, politicians and Hollywood stars. </strong></p>
<p><strong>&#8220;In 2004, I was visited by Queen Sophia of Spain</strong>, who knew my father. &#8220;I made sandals for her son, <strong>Felipe</strong>,&#8221; Pantelis says and continues: <strong>“Jill Biden, the wife of the current President of the United States, who was Vice President back then, visited me in 2011</strong>. It was an intense day. The police had closed off Ermou St., while some guys with sunglasses glasses were all around the store, like the FBI agents we see in movies &#8220;, he states.</p>

<p>&#8220;<strong>Sarah Jessica Parker</strong> found out about my sandals through a friend, who got her my sandals and she replied with an autographed photo of hers and a thank you note”.</p>

<p>&#8220;This year I learned that <strong>Eugenia Niarchos</strong> also likes them. A friend of hers came to get sandals and told me that she had sent him to me. A rather meticulous customer was film director <strong>Brian de Palma</strong>, who was a real hair-splitter. With <strong>Lily Tomlin</strong> we became instantly friends and we even went to a patisserie together to eat Greek desserts&#8221;.</p>

<p><strong>Bob Saget &#8211;</strong>who died relatively recently- came to the store and I mistook him for a doctor. I asked him: &#8216;Are you a doctor?&#8217; and he replied &#8216;Yes, I do surgeries&#8217;. &#8220;At some point someone came over and recognized him and then, I remembered that he was presenting the show with the funniest videos in America.&#8221;</p>

<p><strong>In 2019, Pantelis Melissinos moved his store to the Acropolis neighborhood, at 16 Tziraion Street.</strong> Then, Covid arrived as well and the lockdowns. Of course, now people are starting to find his new place.</p>
<p><strong>&#8220;Some people are still looking for me in Psirri, but now with the internet things are easier,&#8221;</strong> he says.</p>
<p><strong>The recent explosion on Synrou Ave was shocking for him. </strong></p>
<p>&#8220;It happened nearby and all the display windows of my store were broken. They called me and said &#8220;come here, there was a bomb explosion&#8221;. I went crazy! &#8220;Then we heard that it was a gas leak, but nothing has been officially confirmed yet,&#8221; he comments.</p>
<p><strong>As for the dream of his life, the &#8220;Poet Sandal Maker to the Stars&#8221; emphasizes, he wants to finish the way he started, that is with art! </strong></p>
<p><strong>&#8220;I want to work more with my painting, poetry and theater projects and make my sandals even more artistic, a true work of art…&#8221;</strong> he concludes.</p>
