It was a scorching, bustling June day in 2024. Customers streamed in and out of Melissinos Art – The Poet Sandal Maker, snapping up custom-fitted sandals. By noon, the rush slowed. A lull. Then—bam!—the door swung open.

She breezed in—elegant, poised, carrying an air of quiet mystery.

“Good afternoon,” she said, her voice smooth as silk.

“Hello! What can I do for you?” Pantelis Melissinos asked, eager to assist such a polite visitor.

“I’m interested in the ‘Galliko’ model,” she replied.

As always, Pantelis’ assistant handed him a half-made pair in her size. While Pantelis adjusted the straps to her feet, she watched—silent, focused, amused.

When he finished, she glanced at the door.

“I should go—my husband and kids are waiting outside.”

Pantelis slid a pen and paper her way. “Please, your contact info.”

She scribbled quickly, flashed a smile. “I’ll be back at four.”

He glanced down. Usha Vance. The name hit him like Zeus’ thunderbolt. His curiosity got the best of him.

“Any relation to Cyrus Vance—the former Secretary of State? He spoke at my Parsons School of Design graduation ages ago,” Pantelis asked.

She smiled—polite, but distant. “No.”

She turned to leave, then hesitated. Her eyes flicked around the shop.

“These artworks—are they yours?”

Pantelis grinned. “Yep. Poet, artist, and sandal maker—all in one. What about you?”

She shrugged. “Oh, I’m just a lawyer.”

Just a lawyer? The words lingered. Usha Vance… Usha Vance… Where had he seen that name?

And then—boom. It clicked. Her husband—a vice-presidential nominee! And here she was, standing in his shop, buying sandals.

When she left, he turned to his assistants, smirking.

“Well, if she’s wearing my sandals, her husband’s a shoo-in for VP.”

They laughed.

At four sharp, she was back. She slipped on the sandals, took a step, and beamed.

“These are wonderful,” she said.

Pantelis watched her walk out into the golden Athenian sunlight. A thought hit him, and he turned to his team.

“We just made sandals for the future Second Lady of the United States, guys.”

He was right. A few months later, there she stood beside J.D. Vance as he was sworn in as Vice President.

Who knows? One day, she might step into an even bigger spotlight—as the First Lady of the United States.

One sunny day during the Athens Special Olympics in 2011, Pantelis Melissinos entered his shop at 7 a.m., blissfully unaware that his quiet morning was about to spiral into a “Gladiator Sandal” extravaganza.

As he prepared for the day, the phone rang like a fire alarm.

“Who calls this early?” he muttered, answering the phone, annoyed.

“What time do you open?” a sharp, coarse, no-nonsense voice barked.

Pantelis, never one to back down, snapped back: “AT NINE!”

Then the line went dead.

At exactly 9 a.m., Pantelis unlocked the door and stepped into a scene straight out of a spy thriller. Men in dark suits were scattered around the entire block, sweating in the summer heat but somehow managing to look deadly serious. Their reflective sunglasses brought to mind Hollywood movies about spies and FBI agents.

“Either I’m about to sell sandals to the Blues Brothers, starring John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd, or to the Men in Black,” he muttered.

Before he could investigate further, a swarm of young American girls burst into the shop, chattering and trying on sandals like they were preparing for the catwalk.

Moments later, a sweet young woman strolled in and asked for gladiator sandals.

Then it happened!!!

A middle-aged lady walked through the door, calm and smiling— and all hell broke loose.

The girls screamed, jumped, and clung to her like she was the goddess Athena herself.

“Who’s that, do you know her?” Pantelis asked the young woman, adjusting her straps.

“She’s famous,” the young woman replied.

“Like Hollywood famous, or what?” Pantelis asked.

“Famous ‘cause she’s my mom,” she replied with a grin.

Pantelis rolled his eyes. “So what?” he snapped.

“Well, she’s Jill Biden. You know, the Second Lady of the United States.”

Pantelis froze.

“Wait…the Vice President’s wife is buying my sandals?!”

The young woman laughed. “Yep!”

Never one to miss an opportunity, Pantelis grinned.

“Let’s take a photo. By the way, what’s your name?”

“Ashley,” she replied.

“Nice meeting you, Ashley. After you two buy my sandals, your dad—I promise you—will become President!”

They all burst into laughter, and Pantelis, escorting Jill and Ashley Biden, stepped outside for the photo.

That’s when Pantelis, to his astonishment, realized the entire block had been sealed off. Greek police and U.S. Secret Service agents were everywhere, scanning for threats.

“Oh, that’s what the morning phone call was about,” he realized.

As the Bidens were leaving, an American woman trying to enter the shop screamed, “THE BIDENS!!! THE BIDENS ARE HERE!!!” like she’d just opened her front door to a unicorn!

Needless to say, the Gladiator sandals sold out that day—not just to Jill and Ashley but to their entourage and, for all Pantelis knew, half the Secret Service.
